Circus arts to explore the pressing philosophical questions of our age? Australian company Gravity & Other Myths will bring their show The Mirror to Toronto stages for five performances between February 15 and 18.
Director Darcy Grant and Gravity & Other Myths explore the concept of entertainment in the show — what is entertainment to the average modern human? The playful, cheeky performance uses dance and acrobatics to ask larger questions: what face do we show to the world? What do others think of it?
What is authenticity in the contemporary digital world?
Australian company Gravity & Other Myths is based in Adelaide. Its young artists combine circus and physical theatre, with a mandate of creating works that dazzle with their physicality while creating human connections. They have released and toured with six original MainStage productions since their formation in 2009.
The Mirror is their most ambitious work to date.

What are the connections between self-love and self-expression? The show’s big questions are developed and put into focus using innovative design elements, including an LED wall, selfie sticks, and cameras. Pulsing lights accompany the movement, and video incorporates live feeds from multiple handheld cameras along with recorded video art as the performers defy the laws of physics in their metaphorical quest for expression and approval.
It mirrors the extremes that people will go to to please others and garner attention. At the same time, it reveals the parts of ourselves that we keep hidden — those that are truer to our core.
Composer Ekrem Eli Phoenix supplies electronic music and mash-ups.
The Music: Composer Ekrem Eli Phoenix
Australian composer Ekrem Eli Phoenix has a reputation for concept-driven works that push boundaries as they explore the intersections of voice, language, technology and ethnomusicology. He has won multiple award for his work, which includes compositions for theatre, film and dance as well as well as the concert hall.
Ekrem earned a PhD degree in composition from Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and he has collaborated with artists and organizations such as the Sydney Philharmonia, Ensemble Offspring, Palau de la Musica, Barcelona, and Centre of Creative Research into Sound Arts Practice at University of the Arts, London, among others, along with Gravity & Other Myths.
The music will be performed by singer and actor Megan Drury.
