Toronto Symphony Orchestra/Yuja Wang
Thursday Oct. 20, 8 p.m. (repeats Saturday Oct. 22 at 8 p.m.). Roy Thomson Hall, $35+
Gustavo Gimeno leads Bruckner’s mighty Fourth Symphony in a program including the Canadian premiere (the world premiere happened last week in San Francisco) of the Piano Concerto No. 3 by Magnus Lindberg, a formerly hardboiled modernist who has adopted a more accessible style. Dido and Aeneas/Opera Atelier
Thursday Oct. 20 (repeats Saturday Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday Oct. 23 at 2:30 p.m.). Elgin Theatre. $55+
Back live in the Elgin, the Baroque company revives a 2016 production of the Purcell opera that started it all in 1986. Running time is a little over an hour. The cast of Atelier veterans includes Measha Brueggergosman-Lee as the Sorceress. David Fallis conducts the Tafelmusik orchestra. Tickets and more info here.
Orpheus in the Underworld/Toronto Operetta Theatre
Friday Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. (repeats Saturday Oct. 22 at 8 p.m. and Sunday Oct. 23 at 3 p.m.). Jane Mallett Theatre. $86+
Jacques Offenbach’s light masterpiece of Can-Can fame comes staged with a cast of nine, and two pianists under the baton of Larry Beckwith. Tickets and more info here.
TorQ Percussion Quartet/Soundstreams
Saturday Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. (limited availability) and 9:30 p.m. Universal Music (80 Atlantic Ave.). $65, students and artists $30
Six premieres by newcomers are on this program by the percussion ensemble, along with Donnacha Dennehy’s Surface Tension. The venue is Universal Music, a space in Liberty Village. Tickets and more info here.
Louise Bessette/Canadian Music Centre
Sunday Oct. 23 at 3 p.m. Canadian Music Centre. $15 (advance), $20 (door), students $10
Well known in Quebec, this fine pianist visits the CMC with a recital made of music by François Dompierre, Jose Evangelista, Paul Frehner, Anthony Rozankovic and the late Gilles Tremblay. Tickets and more info here.
Cheng² Duo/Mooredale Concerts
Sunday Oct. 23 at 3:15 p.m. Walter Hall. $45, seniors $40, under 30 $30
The acclaimed brother/sister cello/piano duo play Arvo Pärt (Fratres), Brahms (Sonata Op. 78), Prokofiev (Sonata Op. 119) and Piazzolla (Le Grand Tango). Tickets and more info here.
