Early music specialists The Toronto Consort have announced that Managing Director Michelle Knight will be leaving her post for another opportunity.

Although the associated media release does not mention the details, Knight’s new position is said to involve another Toronto performing arts organization, with an announcement to come in early September.

The organization’s board of directors issued a statement wishing her well, calling it a “mixed feelings” announcement. They noted Knight’s contributions to the Toronto Consort during her seven-year tenure, including helming the organization as it grew into the digital world, and the launch of Early Music TV.

Reactions…

“It’s hard to find the words to express how much we’ll all miss Michelle. Her enthusiastic vision for the Consort, her professionalism, her tireless dedication to such a multifaceted job, her kindness, and her care for the well-being of everyone involved with the organization are just a few of the many gifts she’s shared since she joined us seven years ago. We’re grateful for her wise, innovative, and steadying influence, particularly during the choppy waters of these pandemic years. Though we’re sad to see her go, we wish her success and happiness in this new phase of her career!” — Alison Melville, on behalf of the Artistic Associates

“The past seven years at the Consort have been the highlight of both my personal life and my professional career. I am so grateful to have had the honour of working with the wonderfully talented Artistic Associates, dedicated board members and volunteers, devoted audiences, and supportive donors and funders. Thank you for this opportunity to make meaningful music connections.” — Michelle Knight

Mx. Addie Smith, Director of Audience Engagement and Education, will take over the Managing Director’s role in the interim. Smith had worked closely with Knight over a period of several years.

The Toronto Consort was founded in 1972, and has since garnered an international reputation for their performances of music from the medieval, renaissance and early baroque periods — roughly between 1100 and 1650 AD. Their performances often involve multidisciplinary or multimedia elements, and a collaboration with guest artists.
