The Cecilia String Quartet have announced that the 2017-2018 season will be their final one together.

The news comes unexpectedly, as the Cecilias had recently accepted the services of U.S.-based arts management firm Arts28 and had expected to increase their activity in the United States. This is in addition to the previously-announced appointment of cellist Claire Bryant in their final season, stepping in for Rachel Desoer who leaves in October 2017 to honour “personal project commitments,” according to the Arts28 website.

Since winning the 2010 Banff International String Quartet Competition, the ensemble has been Quartet-In-Residence at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music, further expanding their reach in performances and workshops across Canada and the United States. Notable collaborations include performances with Afiara Quartet (who have also announced plans to disband), pianist Stewart Goodyear, as well as with Karin Kei Nagano, daughter of Kent Nagano. A significant undertaking of the Quartet includes their “Celebrating Canadian Women in Music” project, which yielded four new commissions by composers Katarina Ćurčin, Kati Agócs, Emilie LeBel, and Nicole Lizée.

“Thank you, quartet sisters, for the past 10 years!” violinist Min-Jeong Koh reflected on her time with the Quartet, yesterday evening on her Facebook page. “It has been an incredible journey.”

Since its original formation in 2004, violist Caitlin Boyle, then Koh, then cellist Rachel Desoer subsequently joined violinist Sarah Nematallah over the years to form the Cecilia String Quartet’s current configuration.

Correction, July 22, 2017, 11:53 a.m.: The Cecilia String Quartet’s founding year and current member timeline were added for clarification against Koh’s Facebook statement.
