As Owen Pallet noted in his musical analysis of Daft Punk’s 2013 hit ‘Get Lucky’, “this is pop, where repetition is king, and our time is more valuable than yours.” In other words, it’s based on a repetitive four-chord loop would make Steve Reich proud to call it his own.
But over at the YouTube channel, Les covers de Persiflette, they have taken things a bit further. They’ve made a clever video mashup the song performed in the styles from gregorian chant to high-modernism. Composers include Goudimel, Lully, Handel, Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Brahms, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Satie, Ravel, Bernstein, Gershwin, Ligeti, Stravinsky, and Shostakovich.
Not only does this video show you all the fun you can have with a music degree, it also shows — in real time — just how much music styles have changed over the past 500 years.
