Ottawa’s Opera Lyra has announced that Kevin Mallon will begin a one-year stint as interim artistic director this July, and has already begun working with the producer in an unofficial capacity.

Opera Lyra recently clawed its way out of a financial crisis which saw it suspend productions in 2011 and launch a major restructuring. In August of 2013, board chair Victor Rabinovitch announced that the company had fixed its finances and repaid its debts.

Shortly after that, artistic director Tyrone Paterson announced that he would leave at the end of this, the 2013-14 season, Opera Lyra’s 29th. It featured Carmen and The Pirates of Penzance last fall, with a production of Madama Butterfly still to come in April.

Mallon has had a presence in Ottawa since taking over the artistic directorship of the Thirteen Strings Chamber Orchestra in 2010.

In Toronto, Mallon is the founding artistic director of the Aradia Ensemble, a freelance, period-instrument orchestra whose next engagement is with Voicebox/Opera in Concert’s presentation of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s Hippolyte et Aricie at the Jane Mallett Theatre on Sunday.

Mallon is also in his first season as music director of Orchestra Toronto, a community group based in North York.
