John Terauds, Editor-Emeritus of Ludwig van Toronto, is currently a Divinity student at the University of Toronto and a church music director. He joined the Toronto Star in 1988, was the classical music critic from 2005 to 2012, and continues as a freelance critic for the paper. “Today, one out of nine women is diagnosed with breast cancer. I have just learned that I am one of these women,” Dubeau wrote in a statement. “Like many of the courageous ladies before me that were hit by this disease, I too will beat it. I am lucky to have the support of my friends and family, and I can count on a fantastic medical team right here. Cancer can be cured, especially if it is diagnosed early. Mine was.

“I am sure you understand that I must now take some time and think about myself and my health, and recuperate. In the coming weeks, I will listen to a lot of music and ponder on this quote from Beethoven: ‘Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy.’ ”
