Rarely performed in Toronto, Susannah by Carlisle Floyd is the second most popular American opera after Porgy and Bess, with a gorgeously tuneful score rooted in American folk melodies and hymns. It tells the story of a young woman, a pastor who becomes obsessed with her, and the oppression of mob rule. It’s a dramatic story that resonated at its premiere in the McCarthy-era US, as it continues to do today.
Fully staged performances with piano accompaniment.
Susannah will be sung in the original English with English supertitles.
