Oakville Symphony will present a concert titled Brilliant that showcases the artistry of violinist and rising-star in the classical music world Anna Štube. Brilliant takes place on April 11 and 12, with a program that also features the Canadian premiere of Florence Price’s Suite of Dances.

Music Director Lorenzo Guggenheim will conduct the varied program also includes music from Sibelius and Tchaikovsky.

The full program includes:

  • Florence Price: Suite of Dances (Canadian Premiere)
  • Jean Sibelius: Violin Concerto in D minor
  • Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5 in E minor

Florence Price’s Suite of Dances was originally composed as a set of piano pieces. She subsequently arranged the work for wind band in 1939, and reconfigured it as an orchestral work in 1951. As with much of her oeuvre, she combined traditional Black American musical styles in her pieces. Suite of Dances is upbeat and strongly rhythmic.

“We’re delighted to welcome Anna Štube to Oakville,” says Guggenheim in a statement. “She is a remarkable young artist whose sound is both refined and fearless. This program is designed to let her brilliance shine at the centre of the orchestra, while surrounding her with music that is immediately engaging and deeply moving.”

Latvian Canadian violinist Anna Štube made her professional orchestral debut with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 13. She became the youngest ever winner of the First Prize at the 2019 Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal (OSM) Manulife Competition not long after.

Other wins include First Prize at the 2024 Glenn Gould School Chamber and Corcoran Concerto Competitions, as well as Grand Prize at the Canadian Music Competition.

She was a featured guest artist at the 2023 Banff International String Quartet Festival, and the 2022 Rockport Chamber Music Festival, and was invited to perform a MainStage concert with acclaimed Canadian pianist Philip Chiu at Toronto Summer Music in 2025. Anna was the 2024/25 MacLachlan/Ridge Emerging Artist of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, a program whose alumni also include pianists Kevin Chen and Jaeden Izik-Dzurko.

Anna is also a passionate chamber musician, and has collaborated with the Kronos Quartet, the Calidore String Quartet, the Emerson Quartet, and the New Orford String Quartet. As a member of the Savyon Trio, she has performed at Boston’s Jordan Hall, Palace Wiłanow in Warsaw, Poland, and in various cities across Israel on a promotional tour.

She currently studies at The Glenn Gould School with Jonathan Crow.

Anna performs on a 1667 Andrea Guarneri violin and Marcel Fétique bow, both on loan from CANIMEX Inc.
