Now that winter’s grip has been loosened in Ontario, it’s time to get out and explore as the New Adventures In Sound Art celebrates its 25th Anniversary in South River. The NAISA North Media Arts Centre is the site for an Open House on March 12, 2026.
The open house itself is free.
“In celebrating New Adventures in Sound Art’s 25th anniversary, we also celebrate the over 500 sound and media artists from across Canada and around the world, whose works NAISA has presented over the last 25 years, and the many volunteers who have helped support the organization during that time,” says Nadene Thériault-Copeland, Executive Director, in a statement.
“NAISA’s board and staff would like to thank the Ontario Arts Council, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Department of Heritage through its Canadian Arts Presentation Fund for their ongoing support which has been instrumental in providing ongoinmg ongoing stability to NAISA. It is because of their support as well as that received from the village of South River that NAISA continues to thrive.”
NAISA Open House (March 12, 2026, 1 to 4 p.m., FREE)
Enjoy coffee and cake as you listen to the contributions to NAISA’s memory wall, and add your own soundbyte to commemorate your experiences at the centre and with their events.
You’ll be able to explore and experiment with Anju Singh’s Material Transmissions sound sculpture — be sure to bring an electronic device from home so you can listen to the unexpected sounds it can make during the informal sound jams that will take place all afternoon.
The 10-channel interactive sound installation uses electromagnetic waves and custom build speakers, along with a modified sewing machine. Visitors use a self-made electromagnetic microphone and a geophone to create sounds via waves, motors, and machinery.
The sculpture is on exhibit at NAISA until March 30.
A special component in the NAISA North Media Arts Centre recognizes NAISA’s past history, as well as the important funding it receives through the Ontario Arts Council (OAC).
New Adventures in Sound Art is a non-profit media art organization that presents exhibitions, performances, workshops, lectures, and demonstrations that explore and celebrate experimental and electroacoustic sound art. The centre is also the broadcast point for YouTube livestreams on NAISATube and the internet radio station NAISA Radio.
Their goal is to teach a new way of perceiving sound, and by exposing audiences and artists to the entire spectrum of sound art and technologies, encourage new forms of listening.
