Hope Muir, Joan and Jerry Lozinski Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, will open the company’s Winter Season with the North American debut of Crystal Pite’s Flight Pattern. The Canadian choreography superstar’s work will be on stage from February 27 to March 6.

The production features acclaimed soprano Measha Brueggergosman-Lee

“Following the great success of Angels’ Atlas and Emergence, we are grateful to deepen our partnership with Crystal with the North American premiere of Flight Pattern. This haunting work is certain to encourage powerful and important experiences for Canadian audiences,” says Hope Muir in s statement.

Crystal Pite & Flight Pattern

Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite began her career as a dancer in 1988 at Ballet BC. She went on to join Ballet Frankfurt, and after several years there, she became the resident choreographer of Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal.

Subsequently based in Vancouver, she formed her own company called Kidd Pivot, and both produced and danced in her own works.

As her reputation grew, international companies began to commission her works, including the Netherlands Dans Theater, and Emergence for the NBC in 2009, which garnered four Dora Mavor Moore Awards.

Kidd Pivot became the resident dance company of the German theatre Künstlerhaus Mousonturm for three years, after which she became an Associate Artist with Sadler’s Wells in the UK.

Along with her Doras, she’s won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production (for Flight Pattern), the 2022 Governor General of Canada’s Performing Arts Award, and several more accolades.

Flight Pattern

Flight Pattern was created for The Royal Ballet in 2017. It puts both the trials and resilience of refugees into movement, set to the first movement of Henryk Górecki’s Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, performed by The National Ballet of Canada Orchestra and Measha Brueggergosman-Lee, who will be making her National Ballet and Four Seasons Centre debut.

“Words cannot adequately express how honoured I am to be making my debut at the Four Seasons Centre with the National Ballet. Since its opening nearly 20 years ago, I have eagerly anticipated this momentous occasion,” said Measha Brueggergosman-Lee. “I am deeply in awe of the artistry, leadership and excellence with which I get to rub shoulders in this production. Pinch me because I must be dreaming!”

“It is a great honour to welcome one of Canada’s most acclaimed singers, Measha Brueggergosman-Lee, to The National Ballet of Canada for the first time to collaborate with our orchestra and dancers in Górecki’s transcendent work. Measha infuses every performance with emotional depth and exceptional artistic insight. Her National Ballet debut in Crystal Pite’s powerful and deeply moving Flight Pattern will be truly unforgettable,” said David Briskin, Music Director and Principal Conductor.

Flight Pattern will be presented with Serge Lifar’s Suite en Blanc, which returns to the NBC after its 2024 company debut. Noted for its athleticism, the work is an homage to the artistry of classical ballet.
