Toronto’s Resonant Threads Collective will be presenting a program of contemporary works titled AIR/MOTION, including music by composers Philippe Hurel, Linda Catlin Smith, Ana Sokolović’, and the world premiere of a piece by Tetiana Khoroshun.

The concert takes place on November 2 at Toronto’s ArrayMusic, and the title points to its theme of exploring the connections between breath, rhythm, and gesture in the context of air. Air contains both the silence and the vibrations of sound.

A quick flick of the hand, or a vibrating string, create sound — followed by the impulse to respond.

The Program

The program includes:

  • Philippe Hurel (1955): À bâtons rompus (2008), for saxophone and percussion
  • Linda Catlin Smith (1957): Dirt Road (2006), a work in 15 movements for violin and percussion
  • Ana Sokolović (1968): Shower Song (2021), a whimsical ode to singing in the shower
  • Tetiana Khoroshun (1996): String Quartet No. 4 (2025, world premiere)

Composer Tetiana Khoroshun is known for creating both acoustic and electroacoustic music, along with sound installations, and her catalogue incorporates music for performance, films, and video games. Based in Kyiv, she performs as a member of various ensembles and groups, and is the manager of Sed Contra Ensemble, a group devoted to new music.

She studied music at the National Music Academy of Ukraine, and pursued further studies in acoustic and electro-acoustic music with various mentors across Europe.

Her music and projects have been presented in Austria, Poland, Germany, Slovenia, Croatia, Canada, Azerbaijan, Lithuania, and China, and at festivals throughout Ukraine),as well as in Germany, Poland, Austria, and China.
