Olafur Arnalds & Talos rise from No. 8 to take second position this week with A Dawning, making it the fastest rising album on the Classical Chartz Top Ten.
New to the Top Ten is Beethoven For Three, featuring the supergroup trio of Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax, and Leonidas Kavakos. It’s the fourth album in the series featuring the illustrious trio of musician exploring Beethoven’s works iwth purpose. Each of the albums begins with a chamber arrangement of one of the composer’s symphonies, and it’s juxtaposed with his piano trios.
The new album includes Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 (arranged by American pianist Shai Wosner), alongside the “Gassenhauer” (Op. 70, No. 1) and “Gassenhauer” (Op. 11) piano trios.
“We all feel that being able to participate in a symphony is such a wonderful thing to do,” says Ma in a statement. “One of the things that is really important to do today is to actually go back to the first principles of music, the simple interaction between friends who want to do something together.”
As performed by three musicians, the symphony reveals its compositional genius. This is how most people, for practical reasons, would have heard Beethoven’s symphonies in the 19th century — as chamber music.
New to the Classical Chartz, Viviane Audet‘s Le Piano et Le Torrent make a splash by landing at No. 9 on their very first week on the list. Released back in January 2025, the album is Audet’s second, and includes 15 original pieces. She composed it in the village of Maria in Baie-des-Chaleurs, Gaspésie, where she was born and grew up.
Audet began her performing career as an actor, and as a musician, has been a member of the folk group Mentana for about 15 years with her partner, Robin-Joël Cool. Together, the couple has composed music for TV and films in Québec.
In an interview, Viviane says the album is really a four year project that’s come to fruition. It was begun in 2021 when she set herself the challenge of writing a piece a day on an old upright piano she’d purchased and refurbished a few months earlier. During the pandemic, her grandmother died, and her parents divorced. She moved away from Maria, and began to feel unsettled. Other projects came in between, but the piano pieces lingered on the back burner until she had time to go back to them to record.
