Hope Muir, Joan and Jerry Lozinski Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, announced that the company has won a UK Critics’ Circle National Dance Award. The Award was bestowed for the NBC’s performance of Angels’ Atlas in the category of Best Classical Choreography for Crystal Pite.

The performance took place during the company’s European tour. Angels’ Atlas was presented on Frontiers: Choreographers of Canada, which showcased work by James Kudelka, Emma Portner and Pite at Sadler’s Wells in London, UK in October 2024.

“It is a great honour for The National Ballet of Canada to be recognized with a National Dance Award. The way London audiences embraced our all-Canadian program featuring works by Crystal Pite, James Kudelka and Emma Portner, was humbling and I am so proud of the entire company,” said Muir.

“Angels’ Atlas holds a special place in the company’s history. It was created for us by Crystal in 2020 and has become a significant and beloved work in our repertoire.”

The National Ballet of Canada was one of just five international companies nominated for the UK based awards this year. It’s the fourth National Dance Award win for Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite.

Winners of the UK Critics’ Circle Awards were announced at a ceremony held on June 9 in London.

The National Dance Awards are presented by The Critics’ Circle in the UK each year since 2001, recognizing excellence in the field. They are considered to be the dance equivalent of the theatre-centric Olivier Awards.
