The 26th edition of the Sound Travels Festival of Sound Art launches July 18 with events to celebrate World Listening Day. Indoor and outdoor exhibitions will continue all summer until September 23.
“This year’s Sound Travels festival invites visitors to listen for hidden structures and relationships in seemingly unrelated, even chaotic events. Works in the festival reimagine the relationship of chaos and order in the auditory experiences we encounter both in art and in everyday life,” says Darren Copeland, Artistic Director, New Adventures in Sound Art, in a statement.
World Listening Day | July 18, 2024 at Warbler’s Roost (South River)
July 18 is World Listening Day, and NAISA joins with a global network to celebrate the occasion. There will be a series of events and exhibits to take in.
- It opens with a SOUNDwalk led by NAISA Executive Director Nadene Thériault-Copeland through forested areas by the lake on the property;
- A soundscape work composed by Alberta Shawn Pinchbeck;
- A site-specific performance by Métis multi-disciplinary artist Christine Charette.
Christine Charette will present Roots that Braid Themselves, which explores the vast reach of forest biomes, and the interconnected underground world. The sounds she’s recorded in nature are developed with sampling, then layered with piano and synthesizers to create a web of sound.

Indoor and Outdoor Exhibitions at the NAISA North Media Arts Centre | Continuing to September 23, 2024
The Decomposing Piano Exhibition, as created by NAISA Staff, and the Sensation of Distribution by Mitchell Akiyama and Brady Peters, an installation mounted on the outside walls of the North Media Arts Centre, continue. Sensation of Distribution is meant to impersonate furnace vents reaching up from the ground.
Sixteen Chimes
Sixteen Chimes is an exhibition of work by Brazilian-born, currently Vancouver-based artist Alexandre Klinke. The piece is a sound sculpture, consisting of 16 individual chime bars that are situated around the space.
As an audience member, a custom-made circuit allows you to control the pitch or speed of each chime, creating a unique experience as you walk through the space.
Borderline
Borderline (Almaguin Highlands): Collective counter mapping through sonic geographies is an interactive work by Jessica Thompson. The New Adventures in Sound Art centre (NAISA) provides a map toolkit for you to participate by mapping the sounds of a village in the region.
Your results will be added to the display both in the physical exhibition space and online.

Sound Art Workshops
July 27 and August 24, 2024
NAISA Artistic Director Darren Copeland will lead workshops in how to record your voice, make short field recordings, and edit recordings. You’ll share your creation at the end of the workshop. You don’t need any audio experience to enjoy it, and you can take it multiple times to work on different ideas.
Decomposing Piano Jam Sessions
Every Sunday between July 9 and August 25 at 2 pm, Pay by Donation
The Decomposing Piano is simply that — a piano that has been left to its own natural decay outdoors since December 2022. It’s constantly changing, creating a challenge for improvisation, and people, no matter what their age or musical abilities/training, are encouraged to join NAISA Executive Director Nadene Thériault-Copeland in discovering the instruments new tones and colours.
Laurier Woods SOUNDwalk during Louise de Kiriline Lawrence Nature Festival

The SOUNDwalk takes place during the Louise de Kiriline Lawrence Nature Festival. Led by NAISA Artistic Director Darren Copeland, the focus is on listening to the forest, rather than seeing.
