Opera Atelier announced on Tuesday morning that it will present two new productions in 2014-15: George Frideric Handel’s Alcina to open next October, and a version of Orpheus and Eurydice the following spring.

Co-artistic directors Marshall Pynkoski, who directs all Opera Atelier productions, and Jeanne Lajeunesse Zingg, who heads and choreographs the company’s corps de ballet, cite the dance music in Alcina as incentive to consider staging this Handel opera.

The version of Orpheus in the Underworld that Torontonians will get to see at the Elgin Theatre is Hector Berlioz’s arrangement of Christoph Willibald Gluck’s much-loved opera. That production goes on stage in April, 2015.

Opera Atelier loves working with a stable ensemble, which means many familiar faces return next season.

Singing the witchy title role in the Handel opera will be Meghan Lindsay. Mezzo Mireille Lebel makes her role début as Orpheus.

David Fallis will conduct the period instruments of Tafelmusik for both productions.

You will find all the details here.
