As part of its 2014-15 season-unveiling festivities at the Four Seasons Centre on Wednesday, the Canadian Opera Company announced the latest inductees to its Ensemble Studio young-artist programme.

John Terauds

John Terauds, Editor-Emeritus of Ludwig van Toronto, is currently a Divinity student at the University of Toronto and a church music director. He joined the Toronto Star in 1988, was the classical music critic from 2005 to 2012, and continues as a freelance critic for the paper. He is the co-author of Roy Thomson Hall: A Portrait, a book written with Toronto Star Colleague, William Littler.

Joining the company in August will be: Kitchener-Waterloo-raised Jean-Philippe Fortier-Lazure, a tenor currently studying at the Unviersity of Montreal; Brockville-native bass-baritone Iain MacNeil, currently at University of Toronto; and Quebec City-born soprano Karine Boucher, who is currently with the young artists’ programme at Opéra de Montréal.

Also joining the Ensemble Studio is Calgary-born pianist Jennifer Szeto, who is also with the Altelier Lyrique at Opéra de Montréal right now.

These four will replace outgoing Ensemble Studio members: sopranos Sasha Djihanian and Claire de Sévigné, baritone Cameron McPhail and pianist Michael Shannon.
