The final round of the Neue Stimmen 2013 voice competition will be streamed live from Germany starting at 1 p.m. (Eastern) from the Stadthalle Gütersloh. There aren’t any Canadians on the list, but the quality of the finalists is good.

He joined the Toronto Star in 1988, was the classical music critic from 2005 to 2012, and continues as a freelance critic for the paper. He is the co-author of Roy Thomson Hall: A Portrait, a book written with Toronto Star Colleague, William Littler.

- If you want to wallow in deep, 18th century sacred Italian musical drama, there is an amazing programme from the Ambronay Festival by Christophe Rousset and his historically-informed Talens Lyriques that begins with Giovanni Battista’s Pergolesi’s indescribably beautiful setting of the Stabat Mater (a poetic mediation of on Mary witnessing her son’s death on the cross). - Closer to home is the free, on-demand stream from Soundstreams’ wonderful season-opening choral concert led by Tönu Kaljuste from Oct. 1 at Koerner Hall. You’ll find it here — or here (you can forward to the 6-minute mark to start):
