The Royal Conservatory of Music today announced the creation of the Marilyn Thomson Early Childhood Education Centre, endowed by a $5 million gift from David, Peter and Taylor Thomson. This continues the school’s diversification outside traditional music education.

The new organization, based at the school’s Telus Centre in Toronto, will “develop and deliver innovative early childhood education programs, teacher certification, and digital early childhood education products for use by parents and their children,” said the press release.

Marilyn Thomson, widow of Thomson Corp. heir Ken Thomson, is an alumna and longtime patron of the school’s music education programmes. Part of the Centre’s mission will be to introduce children aged 3 and under to music through a variety of means, including digital apps.
