An old documentary film about Arthur Rubinstein has reminded me how making classical music more accessible was just as important in our grandparents’ day as it is in ours.

The film is hokey in how it tries to set up its premise — but it’s not more silly than today’s reality TV exploits. It’s a great slice of history — and a great reminder that if you have a charismatic musician, more than half the work is already done. There are musical visits with Jasha Heifetz and Gregor Piatigorsky later in the film.
This was made in the early 1950s (this video comes from a Kultur release for television from 1977, now available on DVD here).
