New Adventures in Sound Art presents a sonic hologram of the waters under our concrete and glass

The labyrinth space in Trinity Square.

We can create a semblance of a non-existent place with sound as much as with a hologram — and Darren Copeland, artistic director of New Adventures in Sound Art, is going to prove it in the last of his contributions to the NXNE festival. Participation is free.

People interested in hearing the sounds of the waterways that once flowed where downtown Toronto now stands are meeting up at 7 p.m. right outside the west entrance to the Eaton Centre off Trinity Square.

Here is how New Adventures in Sound Art describes what will happen next:

“Listeners will be led on a soundwalk around Trinity Square Park. During the walk the sonic architecture of the park will be animated by narrow high frequency beams. The beams will project underwater sounds such as clicking noises from fish and will create the auditory impression that the fish are moving along the ground or across the walls of buildings and other structures.”

This is made possible by a the Audio Spotlight, a speaker that can throw sound in particular directions.

You’ll find more information about the organization’s current activities here.
