There isn’t much classical programming any more from Roy Thomson Hall with the demise of its mainstage concert series. But what may be missing in quantity is still there in youthful quality, according to today’s announcement of the 2012-13 season.
The best news is that Roy Thomson Hall continues its advocacy of rising vocal talents with a series of four recitals with piano at the Glenn Gould Studio collectively billed as Canadian Voices.

Toronto baritone Philip Addis, who has been getting raves abroad, most recently at the BBC proms concerts, leads the series on Oct. 28. The other three singers are equally worthy: tenor David Pomeroy on Feb. 24 and mezzos Wallis Giunta (Mar. 24) and Allyson McHardy (Apr. 14).
Two headline names from the grand old days of the biz are violinist Itzhak Perlman, who is coming to present a solo recital with pianist Rohan De Silva at Roy Thomson Hall on Nov. 18, and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the worlds best, coming on Feb. 27. If only they had chosen a more colourful conductor for this tour than the starchy music director of the Cleveland Orchestra, Franz Welser-Möst, this could have been one of the highlights of the coming concert season.
One interesting piano newcomer to catch is Gabriela Martinez, who presents a solo recital at the Glenn Gould studio on Feb. 22.
There are duelling children’s choirs on Dec. 15, as the Toronto Children’s Chorus presents its seasonal concert at Roy Thomson Hall, while St. Michael’s Choir School celebrates Christmas with music at Massey Hall, with an additional performance on Dec. 16.
Thanks to the support of the Edwards Charitable Foundation, there will be three free noonhour recitals at Roy Thomson Hall: the wonderful Victoria Scholars and St. Michael’s choirboys on Dec. 19, the Mendelssohn Singers on April 8, and the Agincourt Madrigal Singers and Northlea Junior Choir on May 2.
