The awards are to be handed out Monday night at a gala concert honouring Leonard Cohen, at Massey Hall.
Sistema Toronto, founded and led by string player David Visentin, is a recent arrival in a growing network of not-for-profit organizations and educational outreach arms of established performing arts presenters dedicated to providing music lessons and opportunities to nurture self-expression to children in Toronto’s at-risk neighbourhoods.
“There is no telling how powerful this impact will be in future years,” said Visentin of the prize, in a statement. “By awarding the children of Sistema Toronto the collective honour of being named The City of Toronto Glenn Gould Protégés, Leonard Cohen is giving much more than a prize. He is instilling hope, awakening dreams, and he is challenging talent to reveal itself in the years to come.”
Sistema, which currently is based in Parkdale, with the collaboration of the Toronto District School Board, provides participating elementary school students with two hours of group instruction every day after school. Its work is inspired by El Sistema in Venezuela.
