Video: Verdi gala without soloists shows off power of orchestra and chorus in opera

I’ve just caught up with a Verdi gala presented in Paris before Christmas. The twist in the programme is that all of the music is either orchestral or with chorus, highlighting Giuseppe Verdi’s remarkable abilities to wring expression out of large ensembles.

Daniele Gatti leads his Orchestre national de France and the Choeur de Radio France in this stirring concert, available for free streaming here. Here’s a very small sample, the infamous “Va’, pensiero” from Art 3 of Nabucco:
