Toronto's Massey Hall gets its best news in a century with new development deal

By John Terauds on January 23, 2012

A complex development deal announced this afternoon is the best possible news for Massey Hall and will fix a dreary stretch of Yonge St. between the Elgin Theatre and Shuter St.

A company called MOD Developments has purchased 197-201 Yonge St., a site that includes a long neglected neoclassical former Bank of Commerce building. It will restore the Darling & Pearson-designed historical landmark, build a 60-storey mixed retail-residential tower to be named after the Massey family (something that presumably needs planning approval) and donate a parcel of land to the Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thompson Hall so that the faded 1894 pile can get proper backstage space and access.

“The proposed gift of this key portion of land at the south of Massey Hall by MOD Developments is an incredibly exciting development for the Hall and for the city of Toronto,” said Charles Cutts, President and CEO of the Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall, in a press release. “It presents us with multiple options to revitalize Massey Hall and we’ll be studying them closely in the coming months. We will begin the process with our board meeting later in January.”

MOD Developments is currently building a condo tower at Yonge and St. Joseph Sts that incorporates the old low-rise facades into the new building.
