It’s that time of year where literally everyone who makes music wants to put on a concert.
Today, for example, fans of children singing can catch the Toronto Children’s Chorus singing Christmas-themed music in the lobby of the Royal York Hotel from noon to 4. (As of this morning, they were $617 away from a fundraising goal of $110,000, which goes to paying for the group’s activities.)
My personal interests, today, would be for the very grown-up pleasures of Franz Liszt in the salon.
Stephen Ralls and Bruce Ubukata of the Aldeburgh Connection have invited three fantastic singers to join them in a look at how Franz Liszt changed the course of Romantic music and concertgoing.
Ralls and Ubukata typically interweave song, piano and spoken word in their concerts, which are celebrating 30 years this season. No one else in these parts puts together salon-like programmes with as much style, wit and grace as these two. And they are wonderful talent scouts, as well.
Today’s guests are: soprano Joni Henson, tenor Colin Ainsworth and baritone James Westman — all three alone are worth the price of admission ($50).
The concert starts at 2:30 p.m., at University of Toronto’s Walter Hall.
Ralls and Ubukata started a mini concert series near their cottage by Lake Huron. Here’s a clip from one last summer’s performances, featuring Ainsworth and soprano Lucia Cesaroni:
