THE SCOOP | National Ballet Raises $1.3 M at Annual Fundraiser with Karen Kain

The National Ballet of Canada has announced it has raised a whopping $1.3 M in donations at their annual fundraiser gala held at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.

MAD HOT BALLET: Northern Lights was attended by nearly 2000 patrons, with a total of 650 at the gala dinner.

The event featured performances by Greta Hodgkinson (Jiří Kylián’s Nuages) with Marcelo Gomes, Principal Dancer of American Ballet Theatre.

Xiao Nan Yu, who celebrated her 20th anniversary year with the company, danced in the world premiere of Choreographic Associate Robert Binet’s The Sea Above, The Sky Below with fellow Principal Dancer Harrison James and Corps de Ballet member Félix Paquet, with costumes by Canadian fashion designer Erdem Moralioglu.

The gala also included a performance by Principal Dancer Sonia Rodriguez and First Soloist Skylar Campbell in Tarantella, Principal Dancers Elena Lobsanova and Naoya Ebe in a “pas de deux” from Coppélia, Principal Dancer Jurgita Dronina and First Soloist Francesco Gabriele Frola in a “pas de deux” from Le corsaire and the company premiere of Surge by Mr. Binet, performed by 14 students from Canada’s National Ballet School.

Canadian dance icons Veronica Tennant, Evelyn Hart, Artist-In-Residence Rex Harrington, and legendary dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov, were also in attendance.
