Luminato Festival celebrates 20 years of summer fun across Toronto in 2026. The Festival runs from June 3 to 28, and includes more than 50 free and ticketed events, with more than 140 performances at 25 locations in Toronto. Leading Canadian and international artists will offer a broad range of experiences in the fields of theatre, circus, dance, opera, music, magic, film, and public art.
More than 1,000 artists will perform or showcase their work, which includes eight exclusive Canadian commissions and seven world premieres.
“Luminato is a bright reflection of all that is great about Toronto” says Celia Smith, CEO of Luminato Festival in a statement. “After 20 years, I’m immensely proud that our friends and neighbours continue to join us in joyful celebration of this vibrant global city.”
This year’s theme is PLAY. That includes experiences infused with a child’s sense of play and imagination, stories that talk about equal play, justice, and reconciliation, and performances and more that examine the need to win, the imbalances of power plays, and more.
Olivia Ansell, Artistic Director of Luminato Festival, adds, “From playable public art that makes you smile and stare in wonder, hearing breakup stories that mirror the playback tapes of our youth through to discovering the courage of feminists who feigned their own insanity to play for truth. Play one, play all, play on.”
Luminato Festival 2026 Highlights
Music
- Lovin’ You: The Minnie Riperton Story (Canadian commission, world premiere) by JUNO Award-winner Divine Brown celebrates the distinctive soul style of Riperton, who influenced artists such as Tribe Called Quest, The Fugees, J Dilla, The Roots and Kaytranada. The performance includes DJ Starting from Scratch and guest vocalist Glenn Lewis.
- Heartbreak Hotel creates comedy out of a series of breakup ballads with a whimsical sensibility, creating an experience that is both weird and cathartic, where the audience can contemplate heartbreaks while sharing laughter.
Movement
- Azzam Mohamed’s Katma (Canadian premiere) creates an immersive all-ages dance experience with a blend of street and club culture.
- Theatre of Dreams by world renowned Hofesh Shechter Company offers audiences a wild and otherworldly dance production where both dreams and nightmares are brought to life.
- Nimba celebrates the culture of Guinea with a combination of dance, circus, and ritual. Co-presented with dance Immersion in association with TO Live.
- Layers of kin by Angela Vitovec (a Canadian commission) creates a living forest of movement, sound, and performance, demonstrating the bonds between humans and plants. Co-presented with Toronto Dance Theatre.
Public Art
- Liz West’s Anthems to Colour — three sculptures will transform ordinary spaces into exciting areas of colour, reflection, and moving walls of light.
- The Power of the Land (Canadian commission), curated by Elder Duke Redbird, celebrates water, life, and culture through performances, ceremony, music, and interactive art over the course of a full day.
- Cyril Lancelin’s Pyramid Fields combines architecture, artwork, and playground in a collection of grid-inspired sculptures. Set next to Mies van der Rohe’s iconic TD Centre and Eberhardt Zeidler’s CF Toronto Eaton Centre, Lancelin’s work creates a playful contrast.
- 20 & Extraordinary: Moments in Photos — TTC riders will be able to enjoy this exhibition of 20 moments that defined Luminato Festival over the years.
Free, Family-Friendly Hubs
Free, family-friendly hubs bring the Luminato experience to everyone.
- Luminato @ Harbourfront returns for the weekend of June 13 – 14, featuring global rhythms, the daring aerial feats of Camion d’Intervention Artistique (CIART), an aerial duet The Air Between Us by Chloe Loftus Dance, and the comedy of Mal Perdedor (Bad Loser).
- Luminato @ Sankofa Square brings immersive performances and installations to the heart of downtown on June 12, including Ode to Joy!: Sing with the Symphony (a Canadian commission co-presented with Toronto Symphony Orchestra in association with Toronto Mendelssohn Choir), where everyone is invited to sing along with Beethoven’s Ninth.
- Luminato @ Lower Jarvis offers a huge tailgate party with art, games, and music, co-presented by Choice Properties.

- Co-presented with Alliance Française, France’s jazz innovators NoSax NoClar & Robinson Khoury offer MŸA, a blend global sounds, infectious rhythms, and electronica.
- Words to be Scene by Compagnie Dérézo — award-winning French author Maylis de Kerangal provides the monologues from Canöes that will lead participants on an audio-led odyssey to six locations within downtown Toronto. Co-presented with Institut Français du Canada.
20th Anniversary Looking Back
In a look back at the Festival’s 20-year history, some of the past favourites make a return.
- RedBall Toronto by Kurt Perschke returns to makes its journey across public spaces within downtown Toronto.
- The Philip Glass Ensemble, assembled by the iconic composer himself, performs his early works, including excerpts from [AS3] Einstein on the Beach, Koyaanisqatsi, Akhnaten, and more.
- The 52 Live: Stories of Women Who Transformed Toronto exhibition was a hit in 2025, and it’s back at City Archives. Presented by Museum of Toronto returns to animate the City Archives.
Special Performances
- Tapestry Opera brings 10 Days in a Madhouse by composer Rene Orth and librettist Hannah Moscovitch to the stage. The opera follows the true, groundbreaking story of journalist Nellie Bly, who had herself committed to New York’s Blackwell’s Asylum in order to expose its shocking treatment of its women inmates. A Canadian premiere, co-presented by Canadian Opera Company in association with TO Live.
- Penn & Teller: 50 Years of Magic presents the storied duo of magicians for a live performance of mind play. A Canadian premiere co-presented with TO Live.
- Play Dead by People Watching invites its audience into a mind-bending world of spectacular acrobatics and movement. Co-presented with TO Live.
9th Annual Industry Series
The 9th annual Industry Series brings together artists, producers, presenters, and decision-makers to engage, exchange, and discover new work across multiple disciplines.
- Luminato will co-present the inaugural Canadian Festival of New Musicals with The Musical Stage Company and Soulpepper Theatre. This series showcases the vibrant future of Canadian musical theatre via new works, book and stand readings, and behind-the-scenes conversations.
- The Wedge Lecture, co-presented with Wedge Curatorial Projects, features acclaimed artist, photographer, and filmmaker Tyler Mitchell and artist and curator Liz Ikiriko in a discussion of how the concept of play has enlivened Black experience by building resilience and joy.

Festival partners team up with Luminato Festival to present more experiences for audiences to enjoy.
- Colourful Parachutes: Imagining Alternative Futures Through the Power of Play, presented by The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery;
- King Arthur’s Night (The Film), an Opus 89 Films production presented by AMI, screening presented by Hot Docs and Luminato;
- Many Beats/One Community presented by Community Music Schools of Toronto.
