PREVIEW | Continuum Contemporary Music Announces Its 41st Season

Toronto’s Continuum Contemporary Music has launched its 41st Season of bold and innovative chamber music. The season for 2025/26 features recent commissions and world premieres, along with Canadian and international contemporary works.

Many will be performed in Toronto for the very first time.

“Our 41st season invites audiences to experience music shaped by the natural world, while continuing our commitment to spotlighting new voices in Canadian music,” says Artistic Director Ryan Scott. “We’re thrilled to bring together our ensemble, guest artists, and the next generation of performers, composers, and curators to share this exciting body of work.”

Continuum Contemporary Music 2025/26

The season launched back in July with the performance of Missing, a Canadian chamber opera by Métis playwright Marie Clements and composer Brian Current, with libretto in English and Gitksan, as part of Toronto Summer Music.

Woven Shores (October 24, 2025, St. George’s Grange Park)

The program includes Anna Thorvaldsdottir (IC), Scape; Ashkan Behzadi (CA), Abyss: Refractive; Nathan Friedman (CA), Barcarolle; Ann Cleare (IR), 93 million miles away; Emilie Lebel (CA), Turning (a World Premiere and Continuum Commission)

Pine Trees and Blue Sky (December 6, 2025, St. George’s Grange Park)

Curated by Artistic Producer and violinist Roan Ma and featuring harpist Stef Van Vynckt, this program includes Marcos Balter’s Violin Concerto, Canadian composer Haotian Yu’s Ritual III, created as part of Continuum’s HATCH 2019 mentorship program, a new and as yet untitled work for violin and harp by Canadian Jessica Ackerley in its World Premiere (a Continuum commission), along with Toshio Hosokawa (JP), Landscape II, and Anna Höstman (CA), Pine Trees and Blue Sky

Outside Hollow (April 11, 2026, St. George’s Grange Park)

Guitarist Rob MacDonald joins Continuum for concertos by Francisco Coll (Turia) and Tomi Räisänen (Sea of Tranquility), a solo work by Canadian composer Amy Brandon (Slancio), and ensemble works by Yaz Lancaster (Shed Velvet) and Jesse Plessis (Ishnala). The 10th Teen Composer Award will be presented before the concert begins.

In addition to concert programming, Continuum continues its Mentorship in Artistic Production initiative, now in its second year. The initiative offers opportunities for emerging artists to create, curate, and present new works.

The organization will also continue Press Play, a web series that will feature more than 15 new works, and extend the reach of Canadian new music to international audiences.
