The 24th Annual Deep Wireless Festival of Radio and Transmission Art takes place from January 9 to March 31, 2025 in South River, Ontario. The NAISA Gallery & Café, and surrounding environment, will play host to a series of exhibitions, performances, and broadcasts, along with a digital album exploring the theme There is Art in Our Nature.

“The complexity of the natural world is astounding in its diversity and acoustic nuance. What are the acoustic influences of nature on the sound-making taking place today? Deep Wireless begins a year long exploration for NAISA’s 2025 programming that amplifies the collaborative relationship between art-making and nature through its 2025 theme There is Art in Our Nature. Wireless transmission of all kinds, from the Internet of Things (IoT) prototyping platform to Micro-Radio FM Broadcast, become the conduit for escaping into the natural world,” comments Darren Copeland, Artistic Director, New Adventures in Sound Art in a statement.

Foresta Inclusive: (ex)tending towards | January 9 to March 31

This interactive exhibit by Toronto digital media artist Jane Tingley takes data gathered from trees and translates it into images, smells, and sounds. Along with her team, Tingley used sensors to gather the data during the summer in real time from a specific tree in the rare Charitable Research Reserve, a community-based land trust in Cambridge, Ontario. The images, sounds, and smells can be experienced during the winter at the NAISA gallery at the interactive exhibit, including that wonderful smell of the forest after a rainfall.

Collaborators include: Hrysovlanti Maheras: Sound Design;
Faadhi Fauzi: Three.js; Ilze (Kavi) Briede: 3D modelling and Touch Designer; Marius Kintel: Firmware support; An Vu: Pod hardware duplication;
Grace Grothaus: Photogrammetry

Storytelling Listening Party as part of Art’s Birthday | January 17

Stories by South River Seniors were collected during a weekly storytelling circle since September, and edited into a weekly podcast titled South River Seniors Telling Their Stories. The podcast is broadcast every Saturday at 1 p.m. on NAISA Radio, and available on demand from their website here. https://naisa.ca/naisa-radio/

At this event, you’ll enjoy cake as you listen to highlights from their stories as they remember South River in days long gone. Stories and highlights will be shared online.

Tree Frog Radio: Tree Frog (Sla-dai-aich) live | February 1

Ben Donoghue will perform his piece Tree Frog (Sla-dai-aich) live, using recorded interviews that revolve around a community radio initiative in British Columbia. In BC’s Gulf Islands, the Tree Frog (Sla-dai-aich) initiative uses the trees as antenna masts for local radio broadcasts.

The performance consists of interview, EMF (electromagnetic field) and environmental recordings which have been modified and looped in real time with an analog/digital system, and will be livestreamed as well as broadcast through NAISA. For the live performance, there will be vegan and gluten free goodies available at the Café.

Ice Sounds for Ice Follies | February 15 & 16 on Olmstead Beach, Trout Lake

Ozhaashikwaa — The Ice is Slippery in Ojibway — is the theme for audio pieces by artists Shaughn Martel, Lina Choi, Genevieve Kiessling, Kyle Vanderlaan and Stephanie Dupuis. The works use ice sounds recorded on Lake Nipissing and Trout Lake, and will be played at two listening parties as part of the Ice Follies Festival. The listening parties are a collaboration between the Near North Mobile Media Lab in North Bay and New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA).

19th edition of the Deep Wireless Compilation | Available February 1

The 19th edition of the Deep Wireless Compilation album explores the theme of examining our relationship to the natural world through unexpected encounters with nature, and typically unheard sounds that are brought to life. The compilation album is available after February 1 on NAISA’s Soundcloud page here.
