IN MEMORIAM | Boris Lysenko, Pianist And Professor Of Piano

Toronto’s piano community is learning of the death of Boris Lysenko, who passed away in early August from a massive heart attack.

The news was made public this morning in a statement by the Dean of the University of Toronto Faculty of Music, Don McLean, who noted that the event had been kept quiet by Lysenko’s family until very recently.

A native of Leningrad/St. Petersburg, Dr. Lysenko studied piano at the Berlin Music Academy and the Leningrad State Conservatory. After an extensive career in Europe as a piano professor, adjudicator, recitalist and performer, he emigrated to Toronto with his family in 1980, where he began teaching immediately at the Royal Conservatory of Music. Between dual teaching positions at the RCM and the U of T Faculty of Music, Lysenko also grew active in the city’s music scene as adjudicator, masterclass clinician, and performer.

Many of his students in Toronto have gone on to enrich the city’s musical life, including Kent McWilliams, Adam Sherkin, Cheryll Chung, Brian Finley, and Marc-Pierre Toth.
