THE SCOOP | Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Hires New Concertmaster

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra has named Nicholas Wright as new concertmaster.
The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra has named British-born violinist as its new concertmaster.

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra has appointed Nicholas Wright as Concertmaster, effective today.

Wright has played with the VSO for the past six years and will replace violinist Dale Barltrop, who concluded his tenure as concertmaster in June 2016. Wright was selected out of a pool of 12 candidates and became the front-runner after an endorsement by VSO Music Director Bramwell Tovey.

“His leadership as a musician and teacher in our community has been enjoyed by our city for several years,” said Bramwell Tovey in a press release statement. ‘He is a wonderful colleague and I look forward to sharing musical experiences with him as my own role changes from Music Director to Music Director Emeritus.”

“Since joining the VSO, I have found a constant source of inspiration in my colleagues and am fortunate to count among them some of my closest friends,” said Wright. “Being part of this orchestra is also so special because of the enthusiastic support of our audience. Every orchestra needs the support of a great community on which to thrive, and I am proud to call this beautiful city my home.”

The British-born violinist will make his debut as concertmaster during the VSO’s Spring Festival running through May 1, 2017.
