PREVIEW | Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra Goes Haus Musik

Haus Musik loosens up the classical music vibe by taking it out of the concert hall and into the bespoke experience.

For many, a night out at a pop-up restaurant or a secret cinema feels more adventurous than going out to a live concert. Millennials have been leading the trend to forgo yet another night out at an expensive concert or nightclub in favour of a more bespoke experience. But how about going out to hear electronic dance music (EDM) alongside Baroque music?

If you are Tafelmusik’s Managing Director William Norris, you’ve found that offering the option of more laid-back concert experience can attract younger audiences. It’s a little like building a bridge, rather than standing in the ivory doorway waving your arms around yelling, “come on in!”

It is this bridge building that has inspired Haus Musik, which launches next Tuesday on May 10, 2016, at 918 Bathurst Centre for Culture.

The event features five musicians from Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra performing baroque music on period instruments in the standing-only venue with a cash bar.

“The starting premise for Haus Musik is that our music can have wide appeal. There’s nothing ‘wrong’ with it. But for some, and particularly audiences new to our music, the traditional concert format can have the unfortunate effect of making the music seem like something to be admired like an artefact in a museum, rather than something to be enjoyed and engaged with. Since arriving in this city last fall, I’ve been impressed with how dynamic the music scene is. I think Toronto is ready for Haus Musik,” says Norris.

The night will include a performance by modular synth producer DJ BSMNT, with Lighting design is by Noah Feaver, and direction and design by FAWN Chamber Creative’s visionary Amanda Smith. The set promises to forge a sonic landscape that bridges the worlds of baroque and electronic dance music (EDM) togeather. DJ BSMNT
