The Canadian Opera Company is, naturally, known for its music, including lavish productions on the mainstage, the free noon-hour concert series, and more.

But, as an organization that exists in the 21st century, the COC knows the importance of compelling images too. That’s why they are inviting emerging Canadian visual artists to submit their work to apply for the Design The Season initiative.

The deadline for submissions is May 22, 2026.

The Opportunity

Selected emerging Canadian artists will be invited to design the official 2027/2028 season image, along with poster art for each opera in the 2026/27 season. Along the way, they’ll be mentored by the pros in the COC creative agency.

The images will be featured on a wide variety of platforms and locations, which include:

It’s a terrific chance for artists to gain national exposure.

All selected artists will be compensated for their commissioned work.

Who Should Apply?

The COC welcomes submissions from emerging Canadian artists who work in any two-dimensional medium, including digital or traditional painting, illustration, and print-making, among others.

Selected artists will demonstrate a strong interest in visual storytelling, along with a talent for creating atmosphere. Being able to translate performance into a visual form is a plus.

Please note: submissions that include AI-generated or AI-enhanced artwork will not be considered.
