The final concert of the season for the Ottawa Bach Choir features Italian and Italian-influenced works of the baroque era. Ensemble Caprice baroque orchestra and soloists will join the Choir in the May 10 concert titled Gloria!

The concert delves into the Italian expression of baroque music.

“Prepare to be Immersed in the brilliance of the Italian Baroque with music by Vivaldi, Handel, and the rarely-performed Cozzolani, including compositions written in Venice, Rome and Milan,” says Founder and Artistic Director, Dr. Lisette Canton, in a statement. “Performed with the distinguished Baroque orchestra Ensemble Caprice and soloists, Ottawa audiences won’t want to miss the passion and grandeur of Italian baroque splendour.”

Ottawa Bach Choir (OBC)

The Ottawa Bach Choir was founded in 2002 by Dr. Lisette Canton, their artistic director. While Bach remains at the core of their repertoire, OBC performs music across historical periods. Their approach combines a scholarly background with passionate performance.

Along with their Ottawa subscription series, the Choir performs and tours across Canada and abroad. Highlights include performances by invitation Bach’s entire chorale cantata cycle at the prestigious Bachfest Leipzig as the only Canadian ensemble, at the Luminato Festival, and in Beijing and Shanghai in 2016. They have also toured across Europe.

The Choir has an extensive recording catalogue, including the JUNO award-winning album Handel, Bach & Schütz.

Ensemble Caprice

Ensemble Caprice baroque orchestra was founded by flautist Matthias Maute more than 30 years ago. Since that time, the orchestra has been established as one of the leading baroque ensembles. The Ensemble performs a regular concert series at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts Bourgie Hall, and tours internationally. They have performs across Asia, Africa, Europe and in North and South America. Highlights include appearances at the Lufthansa Festival of Baroque Music in London, and, in Germany, the Musikfestspiele Potsdam Sanssouci, the Early Music Days in Regensburg, the Händel-Festspiele in Halle, and the Stockstadt Festival.

Ensemble Caprice has performed on more than 20 recordings on the Analecta, ATMA Classique and Antes labels, many of which have won prizes, including a JUNO and four Prix Opus awards.

The Concert

The program includes three master works.

Vivaldi’s Gloria, RV 589

It is believed that Vivaldi composed his most famous Gloria during his time working at the Pio Ospedale della Pietà, although the exact year is unknown. It includes 12 movements, with soprano and contralto soloists.

Handel’s Laudate pueri, HWV 237

Handel the work, a setting of Psalm 112, during his first trip to Rome, and completed it on July 8, 1707. The piece was composed in eight movements for chorus (S-S-A-T-B) and a soprano soloist, along with a small chamber ensemble.

Chiara Margarita Cozzolani’s Dixit Dominus à 8

Chiara Margarita Cozzolani (1602 to 1676–1678) was a composer, singer and Benedictine nun. The setting of Psalm 109 was written for a women’s double chorus (canto, alto, tenore, basso) and continuo, and was first published in 1605.
