U of T Opera: A Tale of Two Cities
Thursday March 9 at 7:30 p.m. (repeats Friday March 10 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday March 11 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday March 12 at 2:30 p.m.). MacMillan Theatre, Edward Johnson Building. $40 ($25 seniors, $10 students)
The seldom-seen 1950 opera by Arthur Benjamin — an Australian-born composer who spent some quality time in both the U.K. and Canada — is classified as a “romantic melodrama in six scenes.” Kelly Robinson directs and Sandra Horst conducts. Info here.
Toronto Consort/Canticum Trombonorum
Friday March 10 at 8 p.m. (repeats Saturday March 11 at 8 p.m.). $72 (senior $65)
The early music society presents Canticum Trombonorum, a Basel-based ensemble comprising two trombones, voice and continuo that adapts late-Renaissance and early-baroque Italian works for this unusual combination. A stress on settings of the Song of Songs is promised. Info here.
Trio Arkel/Alex Liedtke
Sunday March 12 at 3 p.m. Jeanne Lamon Hall. $40
The Toronto ensemble with a guest oboist from the TSO plays Mozart’s three-movement Oboe Quartet, Oliver Knussen’s one-movement Cantata for oboe and string trio and (sans oboe) Sergei Taneyev’s four-movement String Trio Op. 21. Info here.
