The 50th Anniversary touring production of Jesus Christ Superstar in Toronto will not resume in August, as previously announced.
The update from Mirvish Productions noted that Jesus Christ Superstar had been one of the first shows to reopen in November 2021 as pandemic restrictions began to loosen. Performances were sold out, but the Omicron wave cut a cruel swath through Toronto’s theatre personnel at all levels. The province moved to reinstate capacity limits in December 2021 as a response.
Performances of the smash hit show were cut short on Christmas Eve as COVID began to make the rounds of cast, crew, and staff members. Since the show was already scheduled to open in Boston, the run was effectively cancelled.
It was thought that a lucky break would see the show swing back to Toronto in August to complete its truncated run. That’s what was announced earlier this year.
Sadly, after more than half of the tickets for an 11-day run in August were already sold, Mirvish made the announcement today that the show’s return would simply not work, listing logistical and scheduling conflicts.
