The National Ballet of Canada will go on tour to the New York City Center from March 30 to April 1, 2023. The program will include Crystal Pite’s Angels’ Atlas with David Dawson’s Anima Animus and Kenneth MacMillan’s Concerto.
“I am thrilled to be bringing The National Ballet of Canada dancers and orchestra back to New York in 2023, as a part of my inaugural season,” said Hope Muir, Joan and Jerry Lozinski Artistic Director. “After more than two years away from the international stage, we are all excited to return to City Center with these three acclaimed works. The repertoire showcases our accomplished and versatile artists, and I look forward to sharing this distinctive program with New York audiences,” said Muir.
The Program
The company will perform three of its acclaimed productions.
- Angels’ Atlas was created for the NBC by Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite in March 2020. The award-winning ballet explores the fragile nature of life, set to a score by Owen Belton, along with choral works by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Morten Lauridsen;
- Anima Animus is a collaboration with British choreographer David Dawson, a first for the NBC. The ballet explores the dichotomy of extremes, and opposites, using Carl Jung’s designation of anima and animus as parts of the collective unconscious, and set to Ezio Bosso’s Violin Concerto No. 1;
- Concerto was created by Scottish choreographer Kenneth MacMillan, putting Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in F major to life on stage in an impressive ensemble work.
Toronto audiences will have a chance to catch Anima Animus for its Canadian premiere just before the company hits the road for the Big Apple. The last time the National toured to NYC was back in 2008, performing Jiří Kylián’s Soldiers’ Mass. A decade earlier in 1998, the company performed the work of Canadian choreographers James Kudelka, Dominique Dumais and John Alleyne.
