Mirvish has announced their 2022/23 season of blockbusters and innovative shows. There will be 14 productions in total, including six in the main subscription series, three Off-Mirvish shows produced in cooperation with Toronto theatre companies, and an additional five shows.

Here’s a closer look.

Main Subscription Series

The Shark Is Broken: Direct from the West End, and starring the original London cast, the show was nominated for Best Comedy Play at the 2022 Olivier Awards. In Martha’s Vineyard in 1974, while shooting the iconic movie Jaws, production stalls. The leads, Robert Shaw, Roy Scheider and Richard Dreyfuss, are full of alcohol and ego as they struggle with bad weather and a mechanical shark that won’t behave. The North American premiere goes on stage from September to November 2022.

Mean Girls: Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois… The Broadway hit musical features a book by Tina Fey and a talented cast of creatives that include composer Jeff Richmond (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), lyricist Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde) and director Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon). The Toronto premiere takes the stage October to November 2022.

Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical: This feel-good musical tells the story of the Cornish fishermen who topped the charts with their traditional songs. Based on a true story, the North American premiere will be performed by the original London cast from November 2022 to January 2023.

Pressure: Written by David Haig and directed by John Dove (Farinelli and the King), this WWII story looks at the weather forecaster who the entire Allied forces were depending on to launch their offensive on D-Day, June 1944. Starring Kevin Doyle (Downton Abbey, Royal National Theatre) as Scottish meteorologist Group Captain James Stagg, it was a hit in London’s West End. The North American premiere will take place January to March 2023.

Hamilton: The Broadway sensation with books, lyrics and music by Lin-Manuel Miranda finally hits Toronto stages, starting February 2023. It’s American history through a modern lens, with a score that combines hip-hop, jazz, R&B and classic Broadway styles for a unique approach.

Hadestown: With a book by singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, and directed by Rachel Chavkin, the musical won eight 2019 Tony® Awards, and the 2020 Grammy® Award for Best Musical Theatre Album. It’s a love story based on the classic Greek myths of Orpheus and Eurydice, and Hades and wife Persephone. A Toronto premiere, starting July-August 2023.
