Newly easing lockdown rules, a COVID curve moving in the right direction, and vaccinations moving at a clip, have given gun-shy arts groups some optimism for next season.
Sinfonia Toronto has today announced details for its 2021-2022 concert season, “A Joyous Reunion”.
The orchestra will present a hybrid format, combining in-person and virtual concerts.
“I’m thrilled to announce our plans, and I am so looking forward to a joyous reunion with our audiences, our musicians and our community, said Music Director Nurhan Arman in a statement. “Together, we will continue to explore rich traditions and create new ones. Our season will include many world premiere performances and outstanding guest artists who are known nationally and internationally.”
Highlights:
- Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8, Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 and Schubert’s 5th, all in premiere performances of string orchestra versions.
- World premiere of Robert Rival’s Violin Concerto
- Three works by Canadian female composers
The new season features many Canadian soloists, including violinists Igor Pikayzen and Marc Djokic and Toronto-based mezzo-soprano Beste Kalender. Pianists Kevin Ahfat, Jarred Dunn, Artun Miskciyan and Daniel Vnukowski will also make their orchestra debuts.
Sinfonia Toronto will continue its Digital Inclusion Project, which brings the orchestra’s performances to students in Toronto’s non-profit community music schools and residents in retirement and long-term care homes.
Besides regular concerts in at the Jane Mallett Theatre and the Meridian Arts Centre, the orchestra will also perform in Brockville, Sarnia, Barrie and Sault-Marie.
