The Canadian Opera Company has released a video trailer announcing their eventual return to the stage next season.
“For more than a year, our opera house has been dark. But you’ve stood by us and our artistic community. To thank you, we are planning a season like no other…” reads a narrator in a deep baritone voice.
The video marks the first time we’ve heard from the COC in almost 18 months, and a possible end in sight for the organisation that has been waiting for venues to reopen safely since the pandemic began.
Here’s what we know so far:
- The COC will announce its 2021–22 season in August 2021.
- They will be opening in three stages
- All events between September and December 2021 will be free online
In case you missed it:
- After initially denying rumours he was leaving early, COC’s General Director Alexander Neef, abruptly left to begin his tenure at the Paris Opera one year early.
- In October 2020, the COC announced they would be cancelling all productions for the 2020-21 season due to the pandemic.
- In November 2020, the COC named Perryn Leech as Incoming General Director.
- Ludwig Van’s analysis of the COC annual report showed that the COC lost of one-third of their revenue due to the pandemic.
- The COC’s home at Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts Centre as well as the satellite venue at Joey and Toby Tanenbaum Opera Centre, received over $600,000 towards purchasing and installing the technology to enable digital recording and livestreaming.
