Going out with a bang has taken on a whole new meaning at a funeral for Toronto’s Brentnol McPherson — aka Bonny Brent or just “Cabbage”.
The Guyanese-Canadian musician played his last beat at his funeral, live-streamed for friends and family at the Covenant Funeral Home in Scarborough last Saturday.
Surrounded by flowers, McPherson could be seen in a seated position in front of for drum set wearing a bright yellow jacket. Om the drum set was his name and dates “Bonny Brent, 1952 – 2021.”
“Today you are here exclusively at Covenant Funeral Home for the visitation for the late great Brentnol McPherson,” the director Luann Jones announced while sitting beside him. “Today we wanted to do something a little bit different […] our first staged visitation.”
“I believe this hasn’t been done in Canada yet, so again, we’ve been blazing the trail, making history.”
Weekend at Bernie’s
This appears to be the first example of extreme embalming of a musician in Canada.
Extreme embalming has become popular in places like Puerto Rico and New Orleans since 2014. The trend was started by boxer Christopher Rivera who was posed at his funeral standing in the corner of a ring.
