The National Ballet of Canada has appointed Maria Seletskaja as its first-ever Conductor-in-Residence.

A former Ballet Dancer, Seletskaja brings a unique perspective to the two-year term appointment.

Born in Estonian Seletskaja was the former principal dancer with the Royal Ballet of Flanders, Staatsballett Berlin, Zürich Ballet and Estonian National Ballet.

While dancing professionally, Seletskaja also studied music at the Berklee College of Music. In 2013, she began conducting piano rehearsals at the Royal Ballet of Flanders. In 2016, she began conducting full-time, making her debuts at the National Ballet of Georgia and Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra. She was selected as one of five participants for a conducting course with Paul Murphy at the Royal Opera House in May 2019.

“I am very pleased to welcome Maria to The National Ballet of Canada and look forward to having her with us as Conductor-in-Residence,” said David Briskin, Music Director and Principal Conductor of the National Ballet.

“Maria’s experience as an international soloist, combined with her ongoing training as a conductor, has prepared her well for what will be an exciting next step in her professional development. We are delighted to be part of her journey.”
