Montreal — the executive committee of the City of Montreal passed a motion yesterday to allocate generous supplementary funding towards the Montreal International Music Competition (MIMC), permitting it to extend its global reach in crowning future classical music talent.
Beginning next year, the MIMC will receive $100,000 per year until 2020, which represents a $70,000 increase from previous years’ funding for the $30,000 City of Montreal First Prize award. This year, the MIMC had been given $50,000 to host this year’s General Assembly of the World Federation of International Music Competitions.
The announcement coincides with Montreal’s 375th birthday this year, as the city has taken note of the Competition’s position on the world stage. Since its inception in 2002, laureates in its voice, violin, and piano categories have moved on to international careers, including Measha Bruggergosman, David Fray, Nikki Chooi, Beatrice Rana, Jayson Gillham, and Quebec’s Charles Richard-Hamelin.
The 2017 MIMC in piano will be held from May 2 to 12.
