For the first time in its history, The Orchestre Métropolitain will be embarking on an international tour spearheaded by superstar conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
Between November 23 and December 4, 2017, the orchestra will perform seven concerts in six cities with stops in Dortmund, Cologne, Hamburg, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Paris.
The tour will feature a cast of Quebecois and French soloists, including pianist Alexandre Tharaud, contralto Marie-Nicole Lemieux, as well as cellists Stéphane Tétreault and Jean-Guihen Queyras. It will also point up two works by Montreal composers Pierre Mercure (Kaléidoscope) and Éric Champagne (Exil intérieur).
The tour will cycle between two different programs, each designed to showcase Quebec’s cultural history and musical talent.
“Tours are part of my life,” the Orchestre Métropolitain’s artistic director and principal conductor, Yannick Nézet-Séguin said. “This time, it gives me great pride to tour with my Orchestre Métropolitain, which is so close to my heart. To present this ensemble to European audiences, who know it through its recordings but have not yet had the opportunity to hear it in concert, is especially exciting for me, who has performed in all these cities and all these famous venues with my other orchestras. This tour with the Métropolitain’s musicians is an important step on our shared musical path.”
According to Jean R. Dupré, president and CEO of the Orchestre Métropolitain, the tour marks a pivotal period in the orchestra’s 35-year history. “It is a confirmation of the place that the Orchestre has carved out for itself on the international music scene…,” he said in a press release statement.
Dupré said they will dedicate the tour to Montreal audiences.
