Esprit Orchestra has announced its 2016-17 season full of new and returning Canadian repertoire.
Esprit will return to Koerner Hall on to kick-off its 33rd season with a tribute to R. Murray Schafer on October 23rd. The concert will include Schafer’s TSO commissioned Concerto for Flute and Orchestra (1984), Scorpius (1990), Adieu Robert Schumann (1976), plus the Canadian premiere of Switch by Los Angeles-based composer Andrew Norman.
The visit marks Norman second visit to Toronto after last year performance of his critically lauded Play, which made its Canadian premiere by Esprit last season.
Describing Switch, Norman notes: “Cast as a single movement, Switch takes off where my orchestral cycle Play left off in exploring non-linear narrative structures and video game logic. The percussionist’s many instruments act as triggers, turning other players on and off, making them play forward and backwards, and causing them to jump to entirely different musical worlds.”
The 2016–17 Esprit Orchestra season also includes world premieres by Canadian composers Adam Scime, Chris Paul Harman, John Rea, and Analia Llugdar (Feb 12, 2017); and Scott Wilson (April 2, 2017).
