The news of  Yannick Nézet-Séguin, the pride and joy of Montreal, being named as incoming Director of New York’s Metropolitan Opera has spread across the internet like wildfire. But buried in a recent profile piece from the CBC, a previously unknown video of a ten-year-old Nézet-Séguin conducting has surfaced.

The video, found in the CBC archives, shows a young Nézet-Séguin conducting Ravel’s Bolero in front of what looks to be an elementary school class. His talent is immediately apparent. He chops out the beat punctuated with flashes of sprite grins and spastic enthusiasm.

Just for fun, we thought it would be interesting to compare a 10-year-old  Nézet-Séguin with a thirty-year-old Nézet-Séguin conducting the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal through Beethoven’s Eroica.

While the older Nézet-Séguin’s skill if obviously well-honed and thoughtful, his boundless enthusiasm is just as infectious as ever.
