Canadian violinist, Jonathan Crow has been appointed the new Artistic Director of the Toronto Summer Music Festival following the departure of Douglas McNabney announced last March.

Hailing from Prince George, British Columbia, Crow has served as Concertmaster of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra for five seasons and is Associate Professor of Violin at the University of Toronto — a position he has held since 2012.

“As a TSM guest musician myself, I have seen first hand the excellent calibre of the Festival artists and programming, as well as the enthusiasm and dedication of its audiences,” Crow said. “I am very eager to join this exceptional music festival at this exciting period of growth.”

Crow has participated in the TSM Academy and performed during the regular festival season programming numerous times. This upcoming festival he will be a resident guest artist from July 25–August 7, and will also mentor students in the TSM Academy.

“We couldn’t be more pleased and excited to be welcoming Jonathan as the artistic head of the Festival & Academy as we move forward to even greater heights,” Lawrence Herman, Chair of the TSM Board of Directors said.

Despite Crow’s lack of experience as a festival arts administrator, Herman described his credentials as “amazing”, and looked forward to his bringing “impressive talents as a performer and skills as an artistic administrator to TSM.”

Crow will take the helm effective September 1st, 2016 when McNabney officially steps down as TSM’s Artistic Director at the end of August 2016.
