COFFEE BREAK | MRI Shows What Happens Inside A Brass Player’s Mouth

Horn player Sarah Willis gets her face scanned while playing the horn.

(via) “Who would volunteer to spend two hours in a very confined space on their back wearing a Stormtrooper mask and blowing through a plastic mouthpiece and tube into a copper-based horn which was attached to their feet?? Well, me. The things I do for my art!  Actually, it was totally worth it…”

The video shows horn player Sarah Willis in an MRI machine playing horn exercises. The results how exactly how the shape of the mouth changes to create each tone. Teaching correct tongue placement is actually a very difficult thing to do, as you can only really describe how to do it.

Cool stuff!
