This past October, TEDxToronto – created in the spirit of “ideas worth spreading” – gathered some of Toronto’s brightest innovators to examine the theme of “Thresholds.” The home-grown “Spin Cycle” Project fit the bill perfectly.
Spin Cycle sought to find out what would happen when four composers, a string quartet (Afiara Quartet) and a renowned scratch DJ (Skratch Bastid) creatively converge. The three-step process started with each composer writing a piece for the Toronto-based Afiara Quartet. The second step shifted focus to Skratch Bastid, who used recordings of the new pieces to make remixes of each one. After hearing the new remixed versions, the composers then re-composed their original compositions utilizing the remix.
An example of the results is shown in the video above, with an abbreviated version of “Quartet” by composer Dinuk Wijeratne. Neat stuff.
